You’ve made it through the job search process, nailed the behavioural and tech interviews, and finally accepted your job offer! But now what?
You want to succeed in your new role you worked so hard to get. So we’ve put together some tips for getting the most out of your first month on the job and to set you up to reach your goals. 🎯
The first week
Treat your first week similar to the interview. Show up on time with a professional, can-do attitude. You want your boss to feel confident they made the right choice in hiring you. 👔
If it is a hybrid working environment, spend as much time in the office as possible during the first few weeks. You want your coworkers to get to know your face.
Make sure you introduce yourself to everyone. If you’re fully remote, ask your manager who you should set up intro video calls with. Make note of everyone’s names and job titles. 🤝
Sometimes you need to hit the ground running in your new role and it can feel overwhelming. To keep yourself on track, make sure to take notes on all the questions you have. Then book in a 1-on-1 with your Manager at the end of your first week to address your questions and to make sure you’re set up for success going forward.
The first month
The first week jitters are out of the way, now it’s time to really dig in and learn the ins and outs of your role and the company.
During your first month, make sure you gain a clear understanding of what you need to accomplish by the first, third and sixth month in your role. Also know what milestones your team has for the current projects you will be working on. This may mean booking in a time with your manager to specifically discuss these expectations. 📈
Keep these goals or any other guiding documentation handy. Refer to it often to make sure you’re spending your time on the right areas daily and weekly.
Spend a good amount of time getting to know the company, the current processes in place and how your role was handled prior to you starting. Understand why things are done the way they are before trying to change things. Once you understand the business, you can give more insightful suggestions on how to improve things. 🚀
Start building relationships with your colleagues. This helps you better understand what everyone's role is in the company and the company’s product and/or mission better.
One of the best ways to improve is acting on feedback you’ve been given. However, you don’t need to wait until you’ve made a huge mistake to improve. Be proactive in asking for feedback and improving where you can.
It’s also important to keep your recruitment consultant updated as you begin your new tech job. If something feels off or is not what you expected, let your recruiter know. They will also be able to give you advice on how to handle situations in the workplace and are ultimately rooting for your success! 🏆
